Fixing a Clicking Garage Door

Published on 4 years ago

Clicking is a very common indication of a large amount of garage door or garage door opener malfunctions, from innocuous easy fixes to more complicated issues that require technical repairs. Here’s a guide to troubleshooting and diagnosing clicking noises coming from your garage door opener, as prepared by the garage door repair and garage door opener repair experts here at Mazal Garage Door & Gates.

Security Locks Overriding

Security lock overrides can cause clicking noises - this is sometimes accompanied by flashing lights on the remote control opener. Sometimes the wall garage door opener will override control from the remote control, and the system may need to be unlocked and detached from the wall pad.

Circuit Boards

Circuit board damage can cause the garage door opener to click. Sometimes the opener may work, and sometimes it will not. This is usually caused by power surges or outages from a storm, and this may result in temporary circuit board malfunction, or permanent damage that will need to be repaired.

Garage Door Rollers

Garage door rollers can wear out and dent quickly, causing clicking sounds or possibly loud grinding. Rollers usually last about 15,000 full cycles, or an average of 7 years - the same as garage door tension springs; this means that it’s a practical choice to have your garage door rollers and tension springs PROFESSIONALLY replaced at the same time.

Photosensors

Garage door opener clicking can be caused by garage door photo sensor issues. These ground level safety sensors are sensitive to any obstruction, even those as small as dirt, twigs, or leaves. This might result in clicking noises as well as an inability to shut or open up.
